Parenting Commandments

According to Jack Agati
Adapted by Rev. Karen Hagy

When parenting children and youth thou shall have more thou shalls than thou shalt nots – including at least two choices that thou can live with when making decisions.

Thou shall pull a "nutsy" on occasion, remembering it is ok to take a "time out" when trying to figure out how thee is going to deal with a situation

Thou shall take advantage of teachable moments as much as possible.

Honor thyself as a parent. Thou are not perfect nor is thy kid so thou shall not take all the blame when thy beloved does something wrong and do not take all the praise when children do something right. Thou shall remember Jack's 3 questions - What is the kid doing? What is the logical outcome? Can I live with it? Thou shall not forget that all important questions - Have you decided.....?

Thou shall go not only the first mile, but also the second, and the third with thine's kids but it is so much more enjoyable when thou goes with a sense of humor.

Thou shall listen to thy youth as much or more as talk "at" them otherwise thine children will "glaze over and tune thy out".

Thou shall be one that respects thy youth and let's them make choices and face consequences. Thou shall not say, "Son, Daughter don't do this" based on thee's own past experience. Thou shall let them learn from thy mistakes.

Thou shall not listen to the foreign language called "whinish, whinese or whining". Thou shall use a walkman to disengage.

Thou shall remember to care for thy's own soul, recall the need to retreat and step away and thou shall not forget the benefit of becoming unpredictable.

Thou shall remember that children and youth are not possessions but are gifts given and are temporarily entrusted to thy care. However, thou shall recall that Jack said chores are ok because it helps thy beloved kids to become contributing accountable members of thy family.

Thou shall assist our youth in discovering the great things life has in store for them and help them to use their unique talents and gifts for the glory of the greater good and the betterment of self and community.

Finally, Thou shall continue growing as a person and a parent and thou shall remember it is all just business......
