Student Competencies
All graduates of Bedford High School will consistently demonstrate competency through a body of work in five major areas that support the accomplishment of the school’s mission and are aligned with national, state, and local standards. These over-arching expectations encompass developmentally appropriate academic, civic, and social outcomes and identify what a Bedford High School student will know and be able to do upon graduation. The Student Competencies are:
Skills and Knowledge: students will demonstrate mastery of academic competencies throughout the curriculum and extended learning opportunities.
Problem Solving: students will collect, organize, analyze, and assess information and strategies to create, apply, explain, and evaluate solutions.
Communication: students will communicate effectively through listening and speaking, reading and writing, and media.
Self-Management: students will demonstrate respect and responsibility while managing personal time, conduct, wellness, and planning.
Collaboration: students will work effectively with others and strengthen group performance by sharing ideas and workloads.

Bedford High School Mission Statement Process
The months of July and August were a process of “data gathering” for the Planning Team. Ultimately, our data gathering led to a mission statement document which reflects the values and beliefs of the Bedford School community, and was approved by the School Board on September 25, 2006.
The Bedford High School Planning team:
- compiled information and data from comprehensive reports members of the Bedford Community have written (“Envisioning Bedford High School”, “The Curriculum Research Committee Report”, the Bedford District Mission Statement)
- spoke with district administration, school board members and community members.
- researched mission statements from high schools and businesses all over the country
- consulted and reviewed the work done on writing meaningful mission statements
We attended a meeting on Monday night, July 24th with the Bedford School Board. We talked about the District Mission Statement and learned from each school board member what it was that was most important to them with regard to the mission of Bedford High School and the Bedford School District, and asked them to give us some history and insights as to their perspective on what they and the community is passionate about in developing Bedford High School.
On Wednesday, July 26th we met with the Bedford High School Curriculum Research Committee to officially receive their report, get an overview of the committee’s work and gain insights as to what the committee work entailed. The evening offered a tremendous opportunity for the planning team to meet and work with members of the committee and the community. The insights provided to us through this meeting will be vital in our development of the mission statement for Bedford High School.
The Student Competencies are a reflection of what the Bedford community has communicated they want graduates of Bedford High School to know and be able to do. These competencies were derived from input from the Curriculum Research Committee Report, brainstorming from the Bedford Curriculum Committee, findings in Connections to Life and Envisioning a Bedford High school, input from the community, the NEASC Standards, the New Hampshire Frameworks and competency standards work, as well as reviewing many other schools throughout our country.
A school’s mission statement must clearly define what the school community wants for all its members and how we will work toward those goals. It states the beliefs and passions which will drive all decisions made regarding the school. We fully anticipate that the Bedford High School Mission Statement will be a living document that we will all use to guide us in the months and years ahead as we develop the programs and culture of BHS and help each school community member realize his/her fullest potential.
The stakeholders in this process are all members of the Bedford HS community. Their thoughts and insights are embodied in the Bedford High School Mission Statement and overarching Student Competencies.
