In doing so, we will be helping parents and teenagers deal more effectively with the issues and concerns faced by today's families. We believe that we accomplish this mission by offering a wide variety of interactive workshops administered by leading New England psychologists, educators and other professionals." |
What is Stand By Me?
Stand by Me is a program for 7th grade students and their parents in Bedford, NH, run by parents with support from the Lurgio Middle School staff and the Bedford community. The event provides parents (or guardians) and their seventh grade students a unique opportunity to share time together, improve communication and get a better understanding of each other.
It is a one-day workshop consisting of a variety of informative and empowering seminars. The workshops are designed to improve self-esteem, increase communication with peers and parents, deal with conflict resolution, learn about drug and alcohol awareness, internet safety and time management. Speakers and topics change from year-to-year to fit the needs of the students and the parents.
Professional speakers include college professors, health care professionals, authors, community youth leaders, motivational speakers and educators.
How long has Stand By Me been around?
Stand By Me has been around for over 2 very successful decades. It first came to Bedford in 1989 when two parents, Connie Roy-Czyzowski and Lisa Lynch-Heney recognized the need for an anti-drug and alcohol program similar to what currently exists and is referred to throughout the state as “Project Safeguard”. Together with Mike Hague (a youth counselor at McKelvie at the time), the three were instrumental in getting Stand By Me launched. Bedford’s Stand by Me sets itself apart from other “project outreach” programs as it is organized entirely by parent volunteers and is made possible by the support of the community and school system resources.
