| This group is open to any Ross A. Lurgio Middle School student. This local chapter works within the framework of a much larger national campaign. The SADD Mission Statement reads:
"To provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving, and the destructive decisions." SADD's unique approach invlves a group of young people delivering education and prevention messages to their peers through school and community activities and campaigns responsive to the needs of our local area. These young leaders are responsible for informing, supporting and assisting their peers to have the best tools to make healthy decisions. We encourage parents to have open dialogue about zero tolerance for substance use (including alcohol) in adolescence. At the same time, have the conversation about what exactly can be expected when and if your child is found to be using substances. With such a plan in place feelings of fear, hurt and betrayal will not cloud the issue and rational discussion about the real science behind the brain and substance use can be processed. SADD also encourages open dialogue to exist regarding adult drinking and or drug use in the home. During adolescence the modeling of responsible and legal use is strongly recommended. A parent/child contract is offerred to students as a means of further committing to healthy decisions within our community as a whole. |
